My Focusing Teacher: Mary Armstrong

A Life Worth Remembering

On April 21 I visited my wonderful focusing teacher, Mary Armstrong, for the last time. Mary passed on April 22, 2025. We had a live celebration of her life so that she could be with all of the dear friends and family that loved and respected her.

So very much that I bring to my work comes from Mary and Gene Gendlin, the bright lights of my Focusing journey. Mary discovered Gendlin’s work back in the 1970’s. She opened the Centre For Focusing in Toronto in the 80’s and there I was lucky enough to learn from this master teacher.

Now, Nancy Falls, my dear friend who trained with me under Mary’s guidance, has joined me in teaching the FSPM Certification course with the Polyvagal Institute. The legacy of Mary and Gene’s work lives on in so many ways. Mary is not gone for me. As I told her that day, I carry you and all you taught me in my body. It sustains me, and continues to enrich me in all ways. We love you Mary.
